Intriguing Etymologies Part II

The Grass Gorillas

During the time of the Crusades there existed a Muslim sect who fought against the Christian campaign whose tactics included targeting specific individuals, such as important political and military figures. These murderous fiends were also supposed dope fiends. Their behaviour was wild and crazy as if they had taken cannabis. Apparently to be sedated and hungry was an insane frame of mind in the ultra-conservative middle ages. These silent and deadly stoners were dubbed
Hashshashin by their enemies, which means hashish user. This term went on to become the word assassin.
